I take high blood pressure medication and it is still high ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Blood pressure medication

42 year old male, non smoker, non drinker, average weight, reasonable diet and exercise. I started taking the meds five years ago which brought it to a normal level, and now for the last few months it has averaged 146 over 98. I’m not real fond of doctors visits, so any ideas on what to do ? Are those numbers that bad ?
I am anglo and take lisinopril.

Your second number is too high. Doctors want that below 90. Actually, you could get both of your numbers below what they are.

What you do not say is what medicines you are taking for BP and/or for other things at the same time. You also don’t state your race, which is important because blacks more often have BP problems than whites.

If you care about living without fear of a heart attack, you should find a doctor that you like and stay with him.

Will blood pressure medication show up on a pre employment drug screen if I don’t declare it ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Blood pressure medication

Thanks for your replies..
The reason I am asking it that if I tell them I am not taking anything and then something shows up that will fail me on the drug test and will go on my record. And in my profession something like that on your record will ruin your career.

They are only looking for illegal substances!
Best of luck getting the job!!!

Question on blood pressure medication?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Blood pressure medication

I have been on Norvasc 7.5 for a few years for blood pressure.Recently after a somewhat high b/p reading (124/94)my doctor also put me on a water pill.A month later a blood test showed my potassium was low, so now I am also on a potassium pill every day.I really don’t want to take all this medication. Why didn’t she just up my b/p medication?

Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium channel blockers slow the rate at which calcium passes into the heart muscle and into the vessel walls, thus relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily, thus lowering blood pressure.

Diuretics also treat high blood pressure, although in a different way. They cause the body to rid excess salt and fluid. (One of the side effects of diuretics, as you’ve learned, is a decrease of potassium).

So, although both of these meds fight against high blood pressure, they do so in different manners. It is not uncommon for patients with hypertension to take several meds.

What the previous two answerers stated is also correct; the higher the dosage the higher the risk of side effects.

Can I take birth control pills while taking high blood pressure medication?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Blood pressure medication

I’m 24 years old and currently taking Benicar HCT for my high blood pressure. I used to take Estrostep Fe about 4 years ago, but switched to the Depo Provera shot because the Estrostep raised my blood pressure (I wasn’t taking any bp meds then). I stopped taking the shot after a year of receiving them because the side effects were unbearable. So, now that I’m taking meds to control my bp, would my doctor think it’s safe to start the pill again?

Progesterone is a hormone that can affect blood pressure. The mechanism by which this occurs is complicated, but involves both hormone cascades and direct effect on small blood vessels. Because of these effects, it is possible that taking birth control pills can cause your blood pressure to rise. This increase in blood pressure can range from very mild to potentially serious, and may sometimes warrant discontinuing the birth control.

This is something to discuss with your treating physician.

High blood pressure medication. Does it control your high blood pressure at all times or are there still?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Blood pressure medication

times when your blood pressure will rise to dangerous levels.

It all depends on YOU! If you listen to your doctor and follow his instructions as to diet and take the medicine he prescribes. You should be okay. It also depends on how healthy you are in general. You could have other factors that could elevate your BP.

I was born with a kidney disease which caused my hypertension. I take three BP medications to control it.

Even when you are doing everything right, you will have times when it will elevate …. when you eat out, if you get angry, when you get sick, there are many factors that can cause your BP to rise. But you are mostly in control of it.

You may even find out that you can control it with your diet … that is the ideal way. First off get rid of the salt shaker. McCormick and Mrs. Dash make some excellent NO SALT spices. Learn to cook with spices instead of using salt. Stay away from prepackaged "fast food" at the grocery store, stop using canned goods .. get fresh or frozen, avoid eating out as much as possible. The biggest thing … get in the habit of reading labels it could save your life. I gave you the name of an invaluable book to get with another question you asked.
